Le Chef – Gemmayzeh

Famous old, traditional and cheap restaurant of Gemmayzeh street

Gemmayzeh, Beirut

Between 7$ and 14$

Review by Jean

Famous in all Gemmayzeh, Le Chef always invites you to join his table with his famous and loud “Welcome!”.

It serves a range of budget dishes. Plat-du-jour include moughrabiyeh and mloukhiyeh, two dishes you won’t find easily somewhere else. “Le chef” is cheap and offers correct service.

But beware, occidental dishes a-la-carte do not always reserve good surprises.

A piece of beiruti heritage, nostalgic place that reminds you of the golden times of the 70s in beirut. Food seems almost home made both in the taste and presentation. The food speaks for itself... no need for sophistication. Simple down to earth no fuss place... tourist hot spot and office lunch delivery heaven. Soups, salads and a long lists of daily dishes. Things never get boring. Service is very very simple and friendly to the limit you might feel you want to pick up ur plates yourself. A definit MUST do experience in Beirut.

This place has a deceptive title and need to recruit a better waiter. The waiter clearly needs to dress in a more professional way and also need to learn the manners and etiquette of hospitality. He added water that I didn't order to the bill and when I paid, he moved the table to new guests who just arrived while my wallet was still on the table leaving me sitting in an awkward situation. Apparently, the waiter doesn't like his job or he simply lacks adequate manners.
The food could have been better when the menu states something while what you get is a big disappointment. Unfortunately, I didn't take photos of the spinach with meat according to the menu when it arrived the meat was a mission impossible to find in the spinach. The side dish and the salad was really mediocre and the vegetables looked old and about to become fossils.
Last but not least, I wouldn't eat there again even if they offer me the food for free.
